Philosophy and the WSJ

The otherwise estimable Robert Bartley spins a bit out of control today when he lumps together Smith and Burke and condemns French ideas, forgetting that French hero of the American founders, Montesquieu.

This is the philosophical difficulty confronting the GOP: reconciling the traditionalism of Burke with the innovation, energy, and capitalism of Smith and Hamilton.
