What's So Bad About SUVs?

David Brooks reduces the current debate over SUVs to a battle between the jocks and the geeks. Brooks is willing to give moral arguments their due, but he describes the moral hysteria of the geek anti-SUV crowd as "defining righteousness down." Indeed, why don't they pick on a real moral failing? Brooks also elevates the jocks by highlighting the poetic satisfaction derived from owning and driving an SUV which is America's newest muscle car and a representation of latent spiritedness. I don't like to be taken back to the geek-jock conflicts of high school, but this is a funny piece; it will make you want to go out and buy a Ford Expedition or Chevy Tahoe -- or at least cheer one on as it rumbles down the road.
