More for Less

Our friends at OxBlog cite Bill Keller's piece in the New York Times today approvingly for advocating a plan cooked up at the National Defense University in 1999 for dealing with North Korea. That plan became known as "more for more." We would expect more from North Korea in terms of inspections and compliance with non-proliferation; in turn, we would give more financial aid.

Whatever happened to the Reagan Squeeze? Imposing severe economic sanctions against the Soviet Union and letting its sclerotic economic system self-destruct was a key part of the Reagan Doctrine. It almost seems silly to have to remind people of this. Reagan wasn't president that long ago, but our memories of his administrations seem to be worse than his at this point. Peter Schweizer's new biography of Reagan listed below as one of IA's favorites can help jog our memories.

Regarding North Korea, it's time to demand more and give less.
