Friedman's Clarity

It’s completely understandable that regular readers of Innocents Abroad might suspect that a reference on this blog to someone as "the best of the New York Times regular Op-Ed contributors" is a case of damning with faint praise. Well, Tom Friedman is the best of the New York Times regular Op-Ed contributors. His piece today is important, however, because it marks the appearance of discussion about a possible war of civilizations between the West and the Muslim world in the NYT – from a decidedly pro-Western perspective.

Sure, Friedman is the Times’ pro-globalization mouthpiece, so there’s nothing surprising about his anti-theocratic stance, but how often do we get to read about the struggle between the West and Islamism in which the cause of the conflict is explicitly and exclusively identified as a fundamental problem within the Muslim world – in the New York Times?
