Thanks to reader "Ignatius Loyola" for making me re-read Article II of the Constitution. I suppose intense partisanship got in the way of good interpretation in a post that I've since deleted. Still, I might be willing to give the executive more than Loyola -- even presidents I don't like.

Funny that you mentioned Eastland, because that's the book I had in the back of my mind. I originally recoiled from it when I read it years ago, but maybe I've grown closer to it.
