And Then There Are the French

The BBC reports that France will take part in joint naval drills with the Chinese in the run-up to elections in Taiwan. Traditionally, China has carried out such drills prior to a Taiwanese vote in order to intimidate the population, an act I like to call "terrorism light". That the French have decided to take part in the intimidation of a democracy by a dictatorship says a great deal about where French sympathies lie.

But of course this is all part of France's efforts to anger the US when in what the current French government perceives to be in the best interests of France and France alone. That this is the height of cynicism is irrelevant to Chirac's group of idiots. That it also is not in the longterm interests of France is beyond the ken of the increasingly short-sighted French administration. Though thankfully, Jean-Pierre Cabestan of France's NCSR sees it for the blunder it is. It never ceases to amaze me that the French intellectuals are increasingly the sane ones in France today. I'm not sure if that's a good sign or a terrifying one.
