Liberty vs. Obedience

The London Times has a sadly apt description of the newly proposed European constitution in comparison to that of the Americans. Most importantly, it touches on what really separates the free US from obedient Europe: the United States emphasizes the liberty and virtue that are part of the ancient political tradition of the Greek cities while the Europeans tend to vague "values" that reflect a generically religious subservience that has been a hallmark of their history since the fall of Rome. And despite the grand claims of the EU constitution's preamble referring to Greek and Roman traditions, we will see no Madison, no Jefferson, no Adams, no Hamilton coming out of Brussels. In this regard, the greatest elements of Europe's glorious past lie today on the banks of the Potomac.
