France, what have you done?

Christopher Caldwell makes the point that France may not yet understand the fallout from its recent stance on war in Iraq. I would agree with his analysis. Watching television here in Paris, I have the impression that French commentators really haven’t grasped the damage France has inflicted on its relations with the Americans, and perhaps that’s because their cynicism prevented the French from appreciating exactly how serious the US is about recasting the entire international scene. Considering how the current government has behaved over the last few months, this new international scene may be one that reduces France to even less than its current mid-power status. If this should come to pass, it would certainly be the swan song of the once great bulwark of western civilization, but only time will tell.
