New Europe, Old Europe

Donald Rumsfeld's description of France and Germany as "old Europe" in contrast to the "new Europe" of formerly Soviet bloc countries may have infuriated Paris and Berlin, but it seems the phrases are catching on. In a BBC online aritcle enumerating the stands of the various European nations positions' on war in Iraq, we find three categories: pro-US (Britain, Spain, Italy, Denmark and the Netherlands), anti-war (France, Germany, Russia, Greece and Austria) and "new Europe" (Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Bulgaria and Slovakia). It appears that Rumsfeld's appelation has some staying power after all. Incidentally, new Europe is also supporting the US so that means, so far, it's 10 countries with the US, five against.
